What does a car battery do?
Car battery is the most important component for every modern car. Without the battery, it's difficult thing to start the engine easily, and for sure we don't want to crank the engine manually like the old car engine.
Can you imagine, using a car without a good working battery everytimes? This condition could wasting so much times. So, what does a car baterry do? Here they are, three function of car battery...
Providing electric energy while the car engine is off is the first things that the car battery do. The battery is the one and only component were provides a lot of electric energy when the engine is not running.
This electric energy is use for starting the engine, make the engine management systems in ready to use position, or to activating another electrical components such as radio, lights, etc. But, the most electric demand when the engine is off is motor starter.
Motor starter use electric energy from car battery in large amounts so the motor starter can crank the engine and start to make the engine running smoothly.
Another function of car battery is to keep the electric energy from alternator. Alternator main function is to produce electric energy using electromagnetic system when the engine has run. Tthe alternator produce electric energy to use in all car electric components and replace the battery function to providing the electric energy.
At the same time, the electric energy produced by alternator is flowing through the car battery. The alternator voltage is higher then the battery do. So the electric energy, can flow from the alternator to the battery.
When the electric energy flows to the car battery, then the car battery change the electric energy into chemical reaction and then keep it until it's use again when the engine isn't running.

The last car battery function is to stabilize the voltage from alternator so it can used for all car electric components. Major car electric components are works between on 12-13 voltages. Less voltages will make abnormality for the compnents, higher voltage will damage the components.
So, before the electric energy voltage from alternator is used, the car battery will reduce it to 12-13 volts so the voltages are safer to use for. Otherwise, when the alternator voltage are less from 12 volts, the the battery will back up the voltage to the maximum voltage until all electric energy inside the car battery is drain out.
