How to change oil filter spin-on type without draining oil

The oil filter keeps dirt and particles out of the oil to stay cleaner and lubricates your engine better. The oil filter regularly needs to replace because there will be a buildup of dirt that can cause the oil filter to clog.

how to change oil filter

Two types of oil filters are widely used by today's cars, the spin on oil filters type, and the cartridge oil filters type. You can read more clearly about the two types of oil filters in the article on car oil filter types and how they work, which we discussed earlier.

And in this article, we will discuss how to change oil filter with spin on oil filters type. Check out how to change the spin on oil filters type below. But before we do a filter oil change, here is some preparation you should have.

  • A new spin on oil filter type with the same size as your car oil filter specification
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Engine oil
  • Dusting cloths
  • Work gloves
  • Carjack
  • Jack stand
  • Mechanic creeper (optional)

So here is the step by steps on how to change oil filter with spin on oil filters type without draining oil.

1. Lift and prop the car with a car jack and jack stand

The first step on how to change oil filter is to lift the car with a car jack and prop it with a jack stand to expand your working area when replacing the oil filter. Lift and prop the car in the part where the oil filter is placed. It's better to read your car owner's manual book for jacking points and do it carefully.

Use the mechanic creeper to find the oil filter location. Some cars model easy to find the oil filter location, and others hide to the next other engine components. Again, check your car owner's manual if you aren't sure where the oil filter is.

2. Move in the oil drain pan underneath the oil filter

The oil drain pan is necessary to catch any oil that drains out when you remove the filter. Put the oil drain pan directly below the oil filter. Generally, a small amount of engine oil will flow out when the oil filter detaches from the engine. The amount of oil flowing can be different, ranging from a few drops to 1/4 liter (0.05 gallons).

3. Screw off the oil filter

The oil filter should be easily rotated by hand. However, suppose it's hard and difficult to turn by hand. In that case, you will need an appropriate tool to remove it, like a cup that fits it or a self-adjusting band tool called an oil filter wrench.

Turn the oil filter counterclockwise to open it. Be prepared for oil to start leaking out when you take off the filter. Let the oil run out at the moment, then screw off the oil filter completely. Put the old filter facedown in an oil drain pan and let it overnight before disposing of the old filter.

4. Clean the oil filter mounting flange before installation

Use dusting cloths to clean the oil filter mounting flange before installing the new oil filter. Make sure that there is no old O-ring oil filter sticking to the flange. Double gasket a filter is a very messy and potentially expensive thing to do!

5. Lubricate the O-ring gasket on the new oil filter with fresh engine oil.

Dip your fingers into some new engine oil and rub enough to cover the whole rubber ring around the base of the new oil filter. It will help the oil filter fit tightly and with no leaks to the engine block.

6. Screw on the new oil filter by hand

Attach the new oil filter to the flange and gently turn it on clockwise. Keep turning the new filter oil clockwise gently until the filter touches the flange surface. Don't apply too much pressure while turning the new oil filter, and you can end up cross-threading the filter and causing damage to the threads that can be expensive to fix.

7. Tighten the new oil filter 1/4 to 3/4 of a turn

After the new oil filter touches the flange a little tight, give another partial twist no more than 3/4 of a turn to finish tightening it. Only do this part by hand as well. Check and clean if there is oil leakage after installing the filter.

8. Start your engine and wait until the engine idling rpm

Start your engine and wait until the engine is idling rpm. While the engine run, it's better to check your oil filter installation from oil leakage again. If there is no oil leakage, then turn off the engine.

9. Lift down your car

Lift down your car with a car jack and pull out the jack stand. Let the car be in a flat position before adding more engine oil and checking the quantity after a filter oil change.

10. Check the engine oil quantity

Lift the engine oil dipstick, then check the engine oil quantity. Use engine oil with the same engine oil specification for your car and add the engine oil to the level you can see on the oil stick.
