How to get rid of foggy windshield

Foggy windshield often occurs when we drive in cold and rainy weather. Fog will appear if the temperature inside and outside the car has a high difference. That is a condition where the car's outside temperature is cooler than the temperature inside the vehicle.

During driving, our bodies will produce moisture through the breath and skin pores. This water vapour will gradually become saturated due to being trapped inside a cabin where the air does not circulate.

This saturated water vapour will experience condensation due to the temperature difference between the inside and outside the car's temperatures. The condensation from the moisture will stick to the windshield in the form of fog.

If left unchecked, the fog on the windshield will gradually get thicker and can block your view while driving. Of course, driving conditions like this will be dangerous for yourself or others.

Therefore, the fog that appears on the windshield glass must be removed immediately as soon as possible. Here are some tips you can do to deal with the foggy windshield.

1. Turn on the air conditioner (AC)

Turning on the air conditioner will get rid of the fog on the front windshield immediately. The fog happens because the temperature inside the cabin drops and matches the temperature outside the cabin.

Also, turning on the air conditioner will immediately make the air in the cabin circulate. Circulating cold air will speed up the process of removing fog from the windshield.

You can find an air-channel that leads directly to the windshield in some middle and modern class cars. Directing the airflow through this channel, then the fog will disappear instantly.

2. Open the window

The next way to get rid of the foggy windshield is to lower the window, so the glass opens and circulates the air from outside into the cabin.

The wind will balance the air temperature inside the cabin and outside the cabin by opening the window glass, so the condensation process will not occur. It means that fog will not appear on the windshield.

3. Spray an anti-fog liquid

In addition to the two methods above, to overcome a foggy windshield glass is to use an anti-fog liquid. You can find this anti-fog liquid at your local auto shop.

It is also quite easy to spray the liquid evenly on the glass surface then wipe it with a dry, soft cloth. Do it several times until the glass becomes clear again.

4. Apply hair shampoo on a foggy windshield

If you can't find an anti-fog liquid, you can use hair shampoo to get rid of the foggy windshield. This method aims to make the windshield glass surface have an anti-fog effect.

The trick, you only need to apply this shampoo liquid evenly on the glass surface, especially on the foggy part. Then wipe with a slightly damp cloth in the same direction so that the glass doesn't get blur. Don't forget to clean the glass surface again after arriving at the destination.
