Reasons Of Car Won’t Go Into Gear When Engine Running
Driving with a difficult transmission gearshift condition is certainly very dangerous. Drivers may lose concentration due to hard gear shifting. Vehicle speed is not as expected because car wont change gears so that it can cause accidents.
The reasons why manual transmission wont shift into gears are numerous, but generally due to negligence in maintenance and the age of vehicle use. In the following post, we will describe some of the reasons of the car wont go in gear when engine running.
1. Clutch Problems
The most common reason manual transmission won't go into gear when engine running is because of clutch problems. Clutch transmitting the torque from the engine to the drivetrain, firstly to the transmission. When we press the clutch pedal, the clutch will disconnect the torque, so the running gear inside the gearbox will reduce the rotation speed. As the gear rotation speed is reduced, then we can easily to shifting the gear smoothly.
Several components can cause clutch problems, such as :
- Worn out clutch disc
- Broken diaphragm spring
- Corroded input shaft spline
- Broken release bearing
- etc.
The main problem for car wont shift into gear when engine running because the clutch won't work, so it can't disengage the torque from the engine to the transmission. When the torque from the engine is still available to the transmission, it isn't easy to shift the gear into another position.
2. Bad Transmission
Another reason car wont go into gear when engine running is because of a bad transmission. Bad transmission can happen if your maintenance schedule is terrible. Low-level transmission fluid or saturated transmission oil is the first sign that your transmission is going bad.
If there is no lubricant in the gearbox, you could have major damage to the engine and gearbox components by running the car. For example, are worn out synchronizer rings and gear.

3. Shifting mechanism problem
The last thing the car won't go into gear when engine running is because your car shifting mechanism has a problem. Each car has a different movement mechanism. A shifting mechanism is directly placed on the transmission. There is also a shifting mechanism that uses intermediaries such as cables and wires.
In several cases from the car won't go into gear when engine running problems. The bushing on the shifting mechanism often breaks and is worn out. It makes the position of the connection on the shifting mechanism no longer accurate. It is what makes gear shifting difficult and makes the car won't go into gear when engine running.
